Florida Primary Voter Turnout: By the Numbers

Tuesday's Primary Election Saw Light Voter Turnout

Palm Beach County

In Palm Beach County, just over 11% of eligible voters have cast a ballot in this primary so far, short of the 13.6% who voted in the 2018 primary.

As of Friday morning, nearly 1.6 million of Florida's 13.5 million voters had cast votes by mail or at early voting sites.

Below are District List statistic files for the previous month that include active voters as well as inactive voters.

Other South Florida Counties

Voter turnout was also low in other South Florida counties, with Broward County reporting a turnout of just over 10% and Miami-Dade County reporting a turnout of just over 9%.

Both candidates and officials pointed toward a decline in mail-in voting as a possible reason for the low turnout.

Possible Reasons for Low Turnout

  • Decline in mail-in voting
  • Lack of competitive races at the top of the ballot
  • General apathy towards the political process

Conclusion

While it is still too early to say definitively why voter turnout was so low in Florida's primary election, it is clear that this is a trend that bears watching.

If low turnout continues in the general election, it could have a significant impact on the outcome of the race.
