Former US President Donald Trump Counsels PM Benjamin Netanyahu to End Gaza War Quickly
Trump calls for an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza
Trump has urged Netanyahu to take a deal to halt the fighting
Former US President Donald Trump has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza quickly. Trump made the comments in an interview on Fox News on Thursday, saying that Israel must "get it done quickly."
Trump, who has for months urged Israel to end the war in the Gaza Strip as quickly as possible, said that he counseled Netanyahu when they spoke on Wednesday.
One source told Axios that Trump's call was intended to encourage Netanyahu to take a deal that would halt the fighting, but stressed that he did not know if this is what Trump actually said to Netanyahu.
The call between Trump and Netanyahu
According to Axios, Trump and Netanyahu spoke on Wednesday, and the call was described as "tense." Trump reportedly told Netanyahu that he needed to "get a win" and end the war quickly.
Netanyahu, however, reportedly resisted Trump's pressure, saying that he needed more time to achieve his goals in Gaza.
The call ended with Trump telling Netanyahu that he needed to "figure it out," according to Axios.
Trump's relationship with Israel
Trump has been a strong supporter of Israel throughout his presidency. He has moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal.
However, Trump has also been critical of Israel's settlement activity in the West Bank and has called for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The war in Gaza
The current war in Gaza began on May 10, when Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, fired rockets into Israel.
Israel responded with airstrikes, and the two sides have been exchanging fire ever since.
The war has killed at least 230 Palestinians and 12 Israelis, and has caused widespread destruction in Gaza.
International reaction to the war
The international community has condemned the violence and called for a ceasefire.
The United Nations Security Council has held several meetings on the conflict, but has been unable to agree on a resolution.
The United States has called on both sides to de-escalate the violence, but has not taken any concrete steps to stop the fighting.
