Americans and Spaniards Arrested in Venezuela for Alleged Assassination Plot on President Maduro

At least two Americans and a dozen Spaniards have been detained in Venezuela for their alleged role in a plot to assassinateVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to a Venezuelan government official. Attorney General Tarek William Saab said during a televised address on Sunday that the group of 14 detained individuals had infiltrated Venezuela by boat with weapons and explosives. Venezuelan authorities further stated that they also found uniforms similar to the ones used by the country's National Guard.

Authorities Discovered Weapons and Explosives

“The detainees planned to infiltrate the presidential palace in Miraflores and assassinate the head of state,” claimed Saab, who also asserted that the group had been trained in Colombia by a former US marine. This former marine allegedly worked with a retired Venezuelan military official. The Venezuelan government has labeled the incident as an act of terrorism financed by Colombia and the United States. However, Colombia has denied these allegations.

Assassination Plot Investigations

The news of this foiled assassination plot has surfaced just a few days before parliamentary elections are set to take place in Venezuela on December 6th. President Nicolas Maduro will be running for reelection and polls show that he is the likely winner. Saab did not provide any information about when the arrests took place or where they had been arrested. He also did not reveal the identities of the detained individuals, but promised that further details would be released in the coming days. “This is an attack on our country and will not be tolerated,” said Saab, who has vowed to prosecute the suspects to the full extent of the law.
